Some useful resources related to Northwestern University's military-related history includes a digitized WWII midshipman school film here. There’s also a list of those killed in action from Northwestern. And this book documents Northwestern's affiliation with naval training during WWII.

The McCormick Library of Special Collections & University Archives has a number of archival collections regarding student records of those who served in the military but most useful is the Military Training Records collection and more about the Navy Midshipman’s School at NU during WWII and other Navy training programs.

The Captain Benyaurd B. Wygant (1881-1962) Papers and Artifacts is another archival collection. Captain Wygant ran the US Navy Reserve Midshipmen’s School (V-7), located on the Chicago Campus, 1940-1945. He commissioned over 20,000 ensigns for war service. He is pictured in the film linked above.

As for campus monuments, there is a small marker on the lawn outside Northwestern's Main Library near the Norris Center (Evanston campus) that memorializes individuals who died in service and who were commissioned out of the NU Naval ROTC unit. Others honor NU folks who died in the Civil War and in World War I; it is attached to a boulder at the north end of the campus, between the fraternity houses and the newish parking garage (photo attached). That plaque and boulder had been the focal point of the former Avenue of Elms, a landscaped tribute to NU’s war dead (photographs attached).

The names of all known NU military dead (those who died in US military service) also will be found on brass plaques hanging in the vestibule of Alice Millar Chapel. There are smaller or other memorials in and near various Evanston and  Chicago Campus buildings.  There’s one in tribute to David Hanson (WWI casualty) just southwest of Harris Hall (photo attached.)

And finally, this blog post written by our University Archivist about WWII paratrooper Norb Schwartz, is helpful.
